A 'game changer': a new project will 'make' a stadium in London generate energy

"Game changer": New project to 'make' London stadium generate energy

London Stadium roof 'solar membrane' expected to save up to £350,000 per year and will also reduce the stadium's carbon footprint.

By the summer of 2025, the roof of the London Stadium in east London will be covered with solar panels, which will provide energy to power the stadium and reduce carbon emissions. BBC writes about it.

It is reported that solar panels will cover 6,500 square meters of the stadium roof. To minimize the load on the building, it was decided to use a lightweight “membrane” structure.

The panels are expected to enable the stadium to reduce carbon emissions by more than 200 tonnes per year, as well as generate enough energy to power all major events on the site Project cost — £4.35m.

The LLDC estimates that the 'solar membrane' on the roof of the London Stadium will save the stadium up to £350,000 a year. Planning permission was granted at the end of September.

“These solar panels are a game-changer for the London Stadium, turning it into one of the greenest sports and concert venues in the world and significantly reducing energy consumption and operating costs,” &mdash ; said Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy Mete Koban.
