Switching to winter time – all the pros and cons of changing the clock

>> How the transition to winter time affects people

This year, Ukrainians will traditionally switch to winter time in October. We tell you how it positively and negatively affects the human body and society in general!

The hands of the clock are traditionally moved to the last Sunday of October. In 2024, this transition will take place on the night from Saturday to Sunday, October 27, at 4 o'clock in the morning.

Pros of switching to winter time

Back in 1908, summer and winter time were introduced in Great Britain. The British decided to change the time in autumn and spring to save energy resources. 10 years later, the USA joined this tradition, and in the countries of the USSR, clocks began to be changed in 1981.

As it turned out, the economically justified change of time is now only in the following geographical latitudes: from 30 to 60 degrees. By the way, Ukraine is in this zone. However, the success and effectiveness of changing the clocks is questionable, because energy is saved by only 1-3%.

Disadvantages of changing the clock

Clocks are changed not only in Ukraine, there is also such a practice in the world, but most countries have already abandoned the time change.

Doctors and scientists have proven that changing the clock has a bad effect on the human body. A sudden change in regime leads to stress, which causes a number of negative symptoms:

  • feeling bad
  • weakened immune system
  • exacerbation chronic diseases

If you want to minimize the consequences for your body, doctors advise preparing in advance. In order to adapt biorhythms, you need in the first few days after the time change: more fresh air, quality sleep, minimal workload, healthy diet.

Medics also note that winter time is closer to astronomical time. It is more favorable for human life and health than the elderly. Others prove that the change of one hour does not play a special role, because astronomical time is not so important in the modern world, people now practically do not depend on natural factors.

How to prepare the body for the transition to winter time:

  • Reduce physical activity a week before the time change . This is necessary to avoid overtiredness.
  • Do not stay late at work and do not take on heavy work.
  • Watch your diet. Avoid fatty foods and alcohol.
  • Drink more water and herbal tea.
  • An hour before going to bed, turn off all gadgets.
  • On the night of the transition to winter go to bed at 10 p.m., because this is the ideal time for quality sleep.
  • Do all morning rituals in the evening: prepare breakfast, choose clothes, pack a bag.
