US talks with Asian nations to host small nuclear reactors

The US is in talks with several Southeast Asian countries to deploy small modular nuclear reactors as global interest in the low-carbon energy source grows. Bloomberg writes about it.

American officials discussed the matter with their counterparts from the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Southeast Asia, home to more than half a billion people, is looking at nuclear power as a way to meet rapidly growing energy needs and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The Philippines plans to build its first nuclear power plant by 2032, while Vietnam and Indonesia are also considering the technology.

Unlike traditional nuclear reactors, which are huge facilities that take years to build, SMRs are much smaller and can be built in factories, delivered by truck or train, and then assembled on site, saving time and money Although several US companies are developing the technology, it has not yet been deployed on a commercial scale.

The US has had discussions with officials in Singapore who are considering building a modular reactor. The officials also met with counterparts from Thailand, which is in the process of renewing its non-weapons nuclear equipment exchange agreement with the US.
