Doomsday experiment: China tested whether its communications equipment could withstand a nuclear war

The

Chinese engineers tested communication equipment for resistance to a nuclear attack. This reported SCMP.

Researchers modeled a scenario of a nuclear weapon explosion in the stratosphere, which would create a high-atmospheric electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). Such a pulse is capable of disabling electronic equipment over a large area.

According to traditional standards, communication equipment must be ready to withstand an electric field with a power of 50 kilovolts per meter. However, Chinese scientists raised this bar to 80 kilovolts to better simulate the real conditions of a nuclear explosion.

The results of the “Doomsday” experiment showed that the equipment remained operational, albeit after a brief failure. The data network remained intact.

As you know, earlier this year the UN warned that there is now a very high threat of using nuclear weapons – the same as it was during the Cold War. Secretary-General of the organization Antonio Guterres said that the latest technologies, especially artificial intelligence, make this danger even greater.

“Technologies like AI multiply the dangers. Nuclear blackmail has resurfaced, and some recklessly threatens nuclear catastrophe. Meanwhile, the regime designed to prevent the use, testing and proliferation of nuclear weapons is weakening,” he said.

Guterres also called on Russia and the United States to sit down at the negotiating table and agree on the rules regarding nuclear weapons.
