The US Navy conducted a test of the unmanned submarine Orca (XLUUV) from the Boeing company, during which the vessel performed a 48-hour autonomous underwater swim. About it writes Interesting Engineering.

It is reported that during the tests, Orca worked completely autonomously underwater, repeatedly surfacing to recharge the battery. The mission also showcased the submarine's advanced capabilities, including its ability to deploy to remote locations.

The release described the Orca submarine as a “huge” and “ultra-endurance” autonomous platform that offers unprecedented payload capacity, mission flexibility and reliability.

The vessel is capable of swimming at 6 500 nautical miles, which allows for long-term operations. A submarine can carry out ocean expeditions, monitor the bottom and conduct long-term operations on the seabed. The modular design makes it possible to implement a wide range of payloads.

As noted in the publication, Orca application options are still being determined. A submarine's target can be enemy shipyards and ports. In addition, it can be used in risky operations, such as laying mines in narrow waterways.

Technical characteristics of the Orca submarine:

  • length — 15.5 meters;
  • width — almost 2.5 meters;
  • length of cargo compartment — approximately 10 meters;
  • maximum payload weight — 8 tons;
  • speed — about 3 knots (5.6 km/h).
