The National Bank of Ukraine will begin withdrawing old-style 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes from circulation

From November 1, 2024, the National Bank will begin the gradual replacement of banknotes with denominations of 50 and 200 hryvnias of the 2003-2007 models with banknotes of similar denominations of the modern generation (the model of 2014 and subsequent years of issue).

Citizens do not need to specially exchange them. This was reported by the press service of the NBU.

There are no restrictions on payments with old-style banknotes, as they will remain valid means of payment.

How will the gradual replacement take place?

From November 1, 2024, the National Bank together with banks will gradually withdraw from of cash circulation of Ukraine, the specified banknotes, in particular:

  • Banks will not issue such banknotes from cash registers for all types of cash transactions;

  • The National Bank will stop issuing these banknotes to banks, collection companies and cash processing companies.

When entering banks, the old-style 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes will not be will no longer return to circulation, but will be withdrawn and transferred to the National Bank for further counting and disposal.

Why replace banknotes of the previous generation?

National Bank with the aim of increasing the quality of cash in circulation works comprehensively on the optimization of cash circulation and consistently replaces in circulation all banknotes of previous years with more modern and protected ones.

As a result, the hryvnia banknote and coin series will contain only banknotes of the modern generation. This will strengthen the quality and reliability of the cash national currency in circulation. This process takes place gradually and does not create inconvenience for cash payments, at the same time it benefits the state, banks, trade networks, and citizens, – summarized the National Bank.

Currently, gradual withdrawal from circulation and replacement of banknotes with denominations is already underway:

  • 1 and 2 hryvnias of samples from 2003-2007 – from October 1, 2020;
  • 5, 10, 20 and 100 hryvnias of the 2003-2007 models – from January 1, 2023;
  • 500 hryvnias – from August 1, 2024.
