French startup wants to deliver 5G Internet from space

The French startup plans to deliver 5G Internet from space through a satellite network, cooperating with telecommunication operators. TechCrunch writes about it.

What happened

Startup Constellation Technologies & Operations is developing a satellite network to provide high-speed Internet through small fixed terminals in cooperation with  telecommunication operators. In this way, the startup wants to reconfigure the terrestrial 5G spectrum for space communication.

The satellites are planned to be launched into a very low Earth orbit (about 375 km). The company has already raised 9.3 million euros ($10.2 million) in the seed round. The ultimate goal of Constellation — creation of a constellation of 1,500 satellites for global Internet coverage.

Why it is interesting

This project can have a significant impact to the satellite Internet market. Constellation seeks to create a "telecom-friendly" a solution that will allow traditional operators to compete with new players such as SpaceX and Amazon Kuiper. This may open up new opportunities for telecommunications companies in the field of space communication.

According to the company's plans, a test payload will be launched into orbit by June 2025. By the end of 2026, the launch of two prototype satellites is planned. And from 2027, Constellation will start deploying working satellites to create a full-fledged network.

The ultimate goal — creation of a constellation of 1,500 satellites for global coverage.
