EuroTrophy introduces enhanced drone protection for Abrams, Leopard and Challenger tanks

EuroTrophy GmbH, a European defense company and a joint venture between Rafael, KNDS Deutschland and General Dynamics European Land Systems, has introduced an improved version of its Trophy Active Protection System (APS). This updated system is designed for main battle tanks as well as medium and heavy armored vehicles, responding to the modern threats faced by armed forces in various theaters of operations.

The Trophy APS, which has been in service since 2011 and is already in service with NATO, offers advanced protection against modern anti-tank threats, including anti-tank missiles, HEAT rounds and drones. Easily adapted to a wide range of armored vehicles, the Trophy provides 360-degree protection and is effective in a variety of terrains, from forests to deserts to urban areas. With integrated hostile fire detection (HFD), the system provides comprehensive azimuth and angle coverage, including overhead attack protection, delivering proven combat effectiveness with over 2 million operational hours and a high intercept success rate.

According to Managing Director Dan Kalfus' EuroTrophy GmbH, this new capability, added through a software update, enables the system to counter anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), rocket-propelled grenade launchers (RPGs), and UAV threats:

"This capability is based on lessons learned from current military conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, where armored personnel carriers and main battle tanks have been vulnerable to first-person aerial vehicle (FPV) attacks and similar threats,— Kalfus explained, emphasizing the relevance of these improvements in light of recent experience in Ukraine.

The system upgrade, which does not require hardware modification, relies solely on software customization and uses the existing set of sensors and effectors. This approach conserves system weight and size, allowing current Trophy APS users to improve the security capabilities of their fleets without changing hardware specifications:

"Update available to current Trophy users", &mdash ; Kalfus noted.

Adding that it also targets potential new customers, particularly in Europe, where several countries are currently modernizing their land forces.

Kalfus noted that the upgraded system has already demonstrated its effectiveness in combat shooting scenarios. EuroTrophy has made the decision to bring this update to the market only after thoroughly testing its maturity and reliability. Thanks to this proven effectiveness, EuroTrophy is positioned as a key partner for countries seeking to strengthen the protection of their armored vehicles against various threats.

Trophy APS is already integrated into several main battle tanks used by ground forces around the world, including the Abrams, Leopard and Challenger tanks. The system is also adapted for other vehicles preferred by European forces, such as the K2 Black Panther. In addition to main battle tanks, the system can be installed on infantry fighting vehicles and other military platforms, offering flexible integration into a wide range of military vehicles.
