Engineers tested the technology on a scale of up to one megawatt, which is enough to supply hundreds of homes.

CGEN Engineering engineers created a new type of generator that can lower the cost of electricity produced by marine renewable technologies. About it writes interestingengineering.com.

A lightweight, stackable generator system that converts mechanical energy into electricity can also help extend the life of renewable energy installations.

Unlike conventional systems, the new generator allows each module to be added, replaced or moved individually, meaning power companies can continue to operate without extended downtime. The new technology also enables companies to upgrade their systems over time without major overhauls. The engineering team tested the technology at scales of up to one megawatt, enough to power hundreds of homes.

The technology could provide a number of benefits for wind-based renewables, including a 10-15% reduction in the average cost of the energy they produce. It can also increase the lifetime of generator sets by 30-40% compared to conventional generator systems, while reducing the operation and maintenance costs of generator sets by 50-70%.

Supported by Edinburgh Innovations, the commercialization service of the University of Edinburgh , the CGEN team worked with various companies to develop and test their technologies.

Solar and wind power are becoming increasingly important to meeting global electricity needs as the world moves away from fossil fuels. Wind power is the most important component of the renewable energy mix, providing a constant flow of energy even when the sun isn't shining. For this reason, the competition to create bigger and more powerful technologies is intensifying.
