On Friday, October 11, during a meeting in the Vatican, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Pope Francis exchanged symbolic gifts.

The head of our country brought the religious leader the painting “Bucha Massacre: The Story of Marichka”, dedicated to the crimes of the Russian occupiers in the city of Bucha, Kyiv region. This is reported on the Vatican News portal.

The painting by Volodymyr Kozyuk and Vladyslav Zadvorskyi shows the horrors in Buch through the eyes of Marichka – an imaginary girl, in front of whom Russian soldiers tortured and killed her father, mother and grandmother.

In the foreground, against the background of the destroyed city, the artists depicted a child There is blood on the girl's scarf and her cheek. A civilian killed by Russian war criminals can be seen behind. The man was riding a bicycle when he was shot by the occupiers.

Francis also made a gift and gave it to Zelensky a bronze plaque with the image of a flower growing next to a bird and the inscription: “Peace is a fragile flower”.

The conversation behind closed doors between Zelenskyi and the Pope lasted more than half an hour. The topic was war and peace for Ukraine, which the Pontiff calls “martyrdom”. Zelensky said that the main issue during the meeting with the Pope was the return of our people home from captivity. In particular, the president mentioned that journalist Victoria Roshchyna died in captivity in Russia.
