China's Type 15 tanks spotted for the first time with additional hulls to protect against drones

In response to the change in combat tactics after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China began to equip its armored vehicles, in particular its 36-ton Type 15 tanks, “in cages” to protect against drone attacks.

The adaptation is one of several measures taken by the Chinese military after assessing the challenges faced by Russian forces during their war in Ukraine.

Images shared by military commentator Jesus Roman showed that these frameworks had been installed on Type 15 tanks during joint high-altitude exercises in the command of the Western theater of operations at an altitude of approximately 5,300 meters. The metal casing installed above the tank towers is designed to protect the machines from FPV drones.

These exercises marked the first public appearance of Type 15 tanks equipped with such means of combating drones. The deployment of such protective gear shows that China is taking a proactive approach to adapting its military strategies to counter the growing threat posed by drone technology on the battlefield.

Using these "defense cages" represents a wider trend in global military tactics, where special solutions are becoming more common to protect armored vehicles from airborne threats. These structures, while originally improvised, have become a standard defense upgrade in many militaries as drone technology becomes a common weapon in modern warfare.

China's decision to install these systems on its armored units underscores a critical shift in military tactics. and emphasizes the importance of adapting to changing combat scenarios.

The Type 15 tank, also known as the ZTQ-15, is a light, highly mobile vehicle designed for operations in rough terrain, including mountainous regions and dense forests.
