An international group of researchers presented an innovative hybrid technology called WiLo, which allows you to significantly increase the range of Wi-Fi – up to 500 meters. According to the developers, this is achieved thanks to the combination of Wi-Fi and LoRa (Long Range) protocols.
Professor Demin Gao from Nanjing Forestry University in China, one of the leaders of the study, explains that WiLo combines the advantages of both technologies: wide coverage and low power consumption LoRa with high bandwidth Wi-Fi. At the same time, the new technology does not require the installation of additional equipment.

The research group included scientists from the universities of Hong Kong, China, South Korea, the USA and Great Britain, as well as Intel specialists from Germany. The experiments were conducted using a standard LoRa SX1280 transmitter manufactured by Semtech.
The key element of the technology was an algorithm developed by scientists that adapts the Wi-Fi data transmission frequency to match LoRa signals. This allows the two technologies to effectively interact, despite the fact that they operate in the same 2.4 GHz band.
The successful implementation of the WiLo project could be an important step in the development of wireless technologies, opening up new opportunities for IoT solutions and improving communication in remote areas.
