Scientists have created revolutionary lasers, that use sound instead of light

Physicists have made a significant breakthrough in the creation of lasers that use sound instead of light. The new technology can open many practical applications in various fields. Lasers that work on the basis of sound, manipulate quantum particles of sound — phonons.

Researchers used a microsphere made of silicon dioxide, which began to vibrate under the influence of light rays, creating sound vibrations. They then applied an electric field to amplify these oscillations, achieving a thousand-fold increase in their intensity.

The research paves the way for the development of sound lasers that can be used for a variety of purposes, from improving biomedical diagnostics to creating new types of sensors. The results of the research were published in the eLight magazine and may become a key step on the path to the development of the latest technologies.
