Dragon Ball Daima: the end of an era for Yamcha

October 2024 is a month to mark with a white stone for fans of Dragon Balland Akira Toriyama. Just a few months after his tragic death, the mangaka is the undisputed star of this tenth month of the year. While Glénat has just reissued the one-shot Sand Land – which we discovered was adapted into a series on Disney+ in early 2024 -, on October 11, the video game Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero and the animated series Dragon Ball Daima, the master's latest official work, will be released jointly. The anime will be launched October 11 on ADN and Crunchyroll, October 15 on the Mangas channel and October 18 on Netflix. The synopsis of the first episode, revealed recently, promises a very entertaining series.

However, the launch of Dragon Ball Daima is accompanied by a small controversy from Japan. Indeed, The series' official website tells us that “Toru Furuya, who has long played the role of Yamcha in the Dragon Ball universe, will be replaced by Ryota Suzuki.” So don't be surprised to find, when you see Dragon Ball Daima in the original language, that Yamcha doesn't have the same voice as usual. This change in casting is all the more disconcerting given that the voice cast of the universeDragon Ballhas changed very little since the first series.

However, this choice is quite easily explained: seiyū Toru Furuya was at the heart of a scandal in Japan, following his behavior with his partner. In a press release published in early 2024, the actor expressed himself:

I had an affair with a fan for four and a half years until last September. I was attracted to her because of her outspoken support for me, and I recklessly took the initiative to contact her to start the relationship. During our relationship, we had an argument and I unintentionally raised my hand. It was the worst thing I could have done as an adult and as a human being. I also made the unforgivable mistake of causing her to have an abortion.I am truly, truly sorry for the deep pain I have caused this woman, both physically and mentally. I cannot apologize enough for betraying the trust of all my fans who have supported me over the years, disappointing them, hurting them, and tarnishing my reputation. I have also betrayed the trust of everyone involved and caused them a lot of trouble.

This affair and its consequences illustrate the duty of exemplarity demanded of seiyū in Japan. We remember in particular that Takahiro Sakurai, who lends his voice to the characters of Suguru Geto in Jujutsu Kaisen and Giyū Tomioka in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, was he too at the heart of a big controversy due to extramarital relations, and whose revelation raised big questions about the rest of his career. Note that the Tōru Furuya affair also impacts the anime One Piece, since he played the role of Sabo, the brother of Monkey D. Luffy.
