The famous film director and screenwriter Roman Balayan was awarded the Oleksandr Dovzhenko State Prize of Ukraine for his outstanding contribution to the development of Ukrainian film art.

Decree on the awarding of the award is posted on the official website of the President of Ukraine, and it was presented during the opening ceremony of the 50th season of the House of Cinema in Kyiv.

Since the director himself could not be present, the award was received by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Armenia to Ukraine Volodymyr Karapetyan.

I want to congratulate my great compatriot on the awarding of the Dovzhenko Prize, Karapetyan said in his speech.

We note that the amount of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko State Prize of Ukraine is two hundred thousand hryvnias for 2024.

Roman Balayan was born in Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan, but lived most of his life in Ukraine. At first, he studied at the directing faculty of the Yerevan Theater Institute, but in 1969 he graduated from the Kyiv State Institute of Theater Arts named after I. Karpenko-Kary.

Balayan considers himself a student of Serhiy Parajanov. As a film director, he started in 1970 at the Kyiv Film Studio, and made his debut three years later with the film “The Romashkin Effect”. The second feature film “Biriuk” was nominated in 1977 at the Berlinale for the “Golden Bear”. And the tape “Take care of me, my mascot” in 1986 received the “Golden Plateau” prize at the film festival in Avelino (Italy) and the main prize “Golden Tulip” in Istanbul (Turkey).
