In 2000, British director Ridley Scott – already crowned for the successes of Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982) – scores a huge hit with Gladiator. Not content with marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the legendary filmmaker and Australian actor Russell Crowe, the feature film will be the confirmation of Ridley Scott's particular appetite for great historical frescoes, which we had begun to glimpse with 1492: Christopher Columbus (1992). Since then, the director has made several historical films with sometimes excessive ambition, such as the underrated Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Robin Hood (2010), Exodus (2014), the excellent The Last Duel (2021) and the controversial Napoleon (2023), which has just been released in a new extended version.

A cult film par excellence, Gladiator won five Oscars, including Best Actor for Russell Crowe, and reinvigorated public interest in the peplum genre. Several more or less memorable films followed, such as Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004), Troyby Wolfgang Petersen (2004), Alexander by Oliver Stone (2005), 300 by Zack Snyder (2007), a series based on the universe of which has just been announced, or the series Rome (2005-2007), produced by HBO, and Spartacus (2010-2013), broadcast on Starz. Like Beetlejuice, which had the right to a sequel recently directed by Tim Burton (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), and generally praised by the public,Gladiatorwill have a second part expected in theaters on November 13, 2024

Gladiator IIRidley Scott's The Last of Us will focus on the fate of Lucius, Lucilla's son and nephew of Emperor Commodus, who will follow in the footsteps of the late Maximus, the general who became a slave, the slave who became a gladiator, the gladiator who challenged an emperor. After a first trailer unveiled at the beginning of July, Paramount released a second trailer yesterday, showing all the excess of the project led by Irish actor Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Gladiator). On the menu: battle scenes that promise to be breathtaking, duels against warriors mounted on rhinoceroses, reproduction of naval battles inside the Colosseum with sharks (!!!).

In the process, Paramount unveiled a new American poster for Gladiator II, which is reminiscent of the DVD covers of the 2000s. Enough to provoke criticism from Internet users on the social network X, as this non-exhaustive selection shows. (Note that the French poster did not receive much more encouraging reviews…)

Yes, this is indeed an official poster for Gladiator II.

No, it was (apparently) not done on Midjourney.

Yes, it would be worth finding the culprit and throwing him/her to the wild beasts in the arena! pic.twitter.com/mumQyeVbZH
