Japan's destroyer Onami completes missile test launches and strengthens security at sea

Ōnami — a Takanami-class destroyer equipped with sophisticated combat systems designed to combat air, surface and submarine warfare.

On September 17, 2024, Japan's Ministry of Defense announced successful missile training with the combat firing of RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) missiles aboard the destroyer JS Ōnami (DD-111). Army Recognition writes about this.

Ōnami — a Takanami-class destroyer equipped with sophisticated combat systems designed to combat air, surface and submarine warfare. A successful ESSM launch demonstrates effective integration between the ship's Aegis combat system or comparable combat control system and the missile's guidance and launch mechanisms.

ESSM — is a medium-range surface-to-air missile designed to counter modern air threats, including high-speed anti-ship missiles and maneuvering aircraft. The missile is equipped with a solid-propellant engine, tail control for high maneuverability and a semi-active radar homing head.

The vertical launcher (VLS) on board the Ōnami enables rapid deployment of missiles. VLS controls rocket launch sequences, canister temperature, and engine safety mechanisms.

The use of ESSM also increases interoperability with allied navies, especially those of the US and NATO members. This facilitates joint operations and collective efforts to ensure security, which is especially important in dealing with common threats in the Asia-Pacific region.

China's modernization has included the development of modern anti-ship missiles and fifth-generation fighter jets. ESSM's ability to intercept high-speed cruise missiles and aircraft improves the defensive perimeter of Japanese naval vessels, potentially reducing the effectiveness of Chinese access-limiting strategies. In a conflict scenario, the ability to quickly detect, track and engage incoming threats is critical.

China has sophisticated anti-ship missiles such as the YJ-12 and DF-21D that pose a significant risk to naval vessels due to high speed and maneuverability. ESSM is specifically designed to counter such threats. An advanced radar homing system allows you to effectively intercept supersonic maneuvering missiles and aircraft.
