American endurance cyclist Leila Wilcox has set a new world record. She was the fastest person to cross the globe on a bicycle.
38-year-old Leila Wilcox from Alaska traveled 29,169 kilometers in 108 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes. The BBC writes about it.
The athlete set off on May 28, during the trip she crossed 21 countries on four continents before returning to Chicago on September 11, the city where the athlete started and finished. Every day she drove for 14 hours.
To set a new record according to the rules of the Guinness Book of Records, athletes must start and finish the route in the same place, always moving in the same direction. The total distance, including flights, ferries and public transport, should be 40,000 km – the length of the Earth's equator.More than 28,970 kilometers is the minimum distance that can be cycled to set the record.

After starting in Chicago, Wilcox headed to New York, where she boarded a plane to Portugal. She then spent several weeks traveling north to Amsterdam, down through Germany, across the Alps, into the Balkans, and finally through Turkey to Georgia. Then Leila flew to Australia, where she traveled from the city of Perth along the southern coast to Brisbane – there she changed to a flight to New Zealand. After flying around both islands, she flew to her hometown of Anchorage, drove along the Pacific coast to Los Angeles, and then on to Chicago.

Leila Wilcox broke the 2018 record set by Jenny Graham from Scotland. her journey lasted 124 days and 11 hours. The latter supported the athlete and now the new record holder. During the trip, she and her director wife filmed video diaries, which she published on social networks. The couple also published a daily podcast.
