I stared at her, trying to find the right words.
I felt the tension building in the air as Kasia, my only daughter, stood in the doorway of the living room with her fiancé at her side. Her face was full of emotion – anger, disappointment, maybe even shame. I knew this conversation wouldn’t end well, but I didn’t think her words would stay with me forever.
– „Mom, you have to understand that this is the most important day of my life. How can you say no?!” – her voice was sharp as a knife.
I looked at her, trying to find the right words. She was my daughter, my world, but what she demanded of me was beyond my capabilities.
– „Kasia, I would like to help, I really would, but I can't afford it. You know I'm barely making ends meet after your dad died.”
Her face took on an expression of indignation, as if my words were an excuse rather than reality.
– „You can't afford it? What have you been doing my whole life? Where is all the money? You should have been saving for moments like this!”
Kasia and Paweł were planning a grand wedding – rental of an elegant venue, a fancy menu, a band, and a wedding dress that could cover my annual bills.
I knew she dreamed of a perfect day, but the cost was beyond anything I could have imagined.
When I said no, her reaction was like a cold shower. Instead of understanding, I was met with accusations.
– „Mom, you're selfish. I've supported you for so many years, and now when I need something, you can't help me”
– „Selfish? Kasia, I gave you my whole life! I worked day and night so you could study, so you could have everything you needed!”
– „It doesn't matter! Now I need your support, and you're letting me down!”
After that conversation, Kasia stopped talking to me. When I tried to call her, she didn't answer. When I texted her, she replied briefly, without emotion.
Paweł, her fiancé, also pulled away, as if my existence had suddenly become inconvenient.
On the wedding day, I wasn't invited. I found out about it from a neighbor who saw the photos on Facebook. I looked at the smiling faces of Kasia and Paweł, the crowd of guests, the richly decorated hall – everything she fought so hard for. And yet I wasn't there.
I don't know what hurt more – her decision or the fact that she didn't even try to understand me. I devoted my entire life to her. When her father died, I did everything so she could have a normal childhood. I worked beyond my strength, giving up my own dreams so she could study, so she could have a chance at a better life.
And now, when I refused the one thing that was beyond my capabilities, she turned away from me as if I had never existed to her.
A year has passed. Kasia hasn't spoken to me once. Sometimes I see her in town – she walks with Paweł, smiling, happy. I want to go up to her, tell her that I love her, that I will always be here for her. But I'm afraid that her cold gaze will pierce me through again.
I still hope that one day she will understand. That love is not measured in money, and sacrifice is not always visible at first glance. That rejection does not mean a lack of love.
Because even though she turned away from me, I will never stop loving her. But the question is – will a mother's love be enough to mend a broken heart?
