Sony and AMD have launched a collaboration in the field of introducing machine learning technologies into video games.
This was officially announced by Mark Cerny, the chief architect of the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. This project was codenamed «Amethyst», symbolizing the combination of AMD's red and PlayStation's blue.
The companies have a successful track record of working together: the graphics processors for the PS5 and PS5 Pro were created based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture. The PS5 Pro introduced PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology, which improves image clarity and performance in games.
Sony gave a 37-minute presentation during which Cerny revealed technical details of the PS5 Pro and the upcoming collaboration with AMD. The focus was on creating a more efficient machine learning architecture capable of handling lightweight super-precision neural networks for graphics in games, as well as developing high-quality super-precision neural networks that both companies can use to improve the visual component of games and improve ray tracing technologies.
Cerny also noted that the «Amethyst» project is not limited to PlayStation, but is aimed at a wider implementation of machine learning technologies across devices.
