Artificial intelligence helped to choose the optimal design for the Birmingham Blade turbine, taking into account the wind speed in a specific area.
Artificial intelligence (AI) design specialists EvoPhase and precision metalwork manufacturer Kwik Fab Ltd have unveiled the world's first AI-designed urban wind turbine, called the Birmingham Blade. Renewable Energy Magazine writes about this.
The Birmingham Blade is said to be adapted to the unique wind conditions in Birmingham, England. EvoPhase used its artificial intelligence to design the turbine’s design. In addition, AI helped test it for efficiency at wind speeds of 3.6 m/s, which is significantly lower than the 10 m/s rating of most turbines.
“We needed a turbine that could capture the relatively low wind speeds in Birmingham while also dealing with the turbulence caused by the surrounding buildings. The design also had to be compact and lightweight to be suitable for rooftop installation,” — said EvoPhase CTO Leonard Nikusan.
The result was an optimal design of curved blades rotating around a central point. EvoPhase noted that thanks to AI, the company was able to test and refine more than 2,000 wind turbine designs in a matter of weeks, achieving what would have taken years using traditional methods.
“Our evolutionary simulations confirmed that the Birmingham Blade is seven times more efficient than existing designs, taking into account Birmingham's wind speeds and urban environments. The final design — is not just a prototype — it is a predictive solution ready for real-world use,” — Leonard Nikusan said.
According to the publication, Kwik Fab has already produced the first version of the Birmingham Blade. The aluminum version will be placed on a rooftop in Birmingham for evaluation and testing, with the final product expected to be available by the end of 2025.
