Justin Trudeau's government provides $50 million for consultations with First Nations and preparatory work for the expansion of the Bruce nuclear power plant in Ontario.

The province wants to build a new plant on the site of the Bruce nuclear complex, the first new plant in more than 30 years in Ontario.

The total cost of the project has not been quantified.

The new installations could produce up to 4,800 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 4.8 million homes, according to Doug Ford's government.

For Ontario and the federal government, it is a source of green energy, without polluting emissions. Environmentalists, however, decried the project, pointing out that nuclear power produces radioactive waste.

The Ford government has the largest nuclear expansion plan in the country.

In addition to the Bruce power plant project, Ontario wants to build three small reactors on the land of the Darlington power plant and restore nine four reactors at the Pickering power station.
