5 times more energy: old wind turbines will be “revived” in the form of a new project

In place the old 545 MW wind farm will be replaced by a new 3 GW project that will combine two types of generation.

The French company Voltalia SA and the Egyptian division of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) have joined forces to replace the outdated Zafarana wind farm in Egypt with a wind-solar complex with a capacity of about 3 GW. This is reported by the Renewables Now portal. Reportedly located approximately 130 km southeast of Cairo, the Zafarana region is known for its strong winds and intense solar radiation. This makes it an ideal location for generating renewable energy.

As noted in the publication, Zafarana turbines with a total capacity of 545 MW, installed two decades ago, are nearing the end of their useful life. Voltalia and TAQA Arabia have developed a hybrid renewable energy solution that involves the use of this site for both solar and wind generation.

The project provides for the installation of wind turbine generators with a total capacity of 1.1 GW and solar panels with a total capacity of 2.1 GW. In this way, energy generation in this area will increase more than 5 times.

Partners will conduct preliminary technical and environmental studies, such as measuring wind speed, bird migration patterns, solar radiation levels, as well as geotechnical, topographic and environmental estimates.

The initial commissioning of the complex may begin in 2028. This will be the first facility in Egypt that combines solar photovoltaic and wind energy.
