A 5.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Taiwan's northeastern Yilan County. The island's Central Meteorological Administration reported this on Thursday, August 15. The tremors occurred at a depth of 9 km.

There have been no reports of damage yet, Reuters reports.

The earthquake was felt in Taiwan's capital, Taipei. The Taipei subway continued to operate at a reduced speed immediately after the quake, authorities said.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

In April, the island was hit by its strongest earthquake in 25 years, killing nine people and injuring more than 900.
