On October 7, the US Department of Defense announced that the State Department had approved the potential sale to India of light Mark 54 torpedoes and related support worth a total of $175 million. It is reported on the website of the Agency for Defense and Security Cooperation.

India requested a total of 53 MK 54 MOD light torpedoes, as well as non-main equipment items. These include REXTORP training torpedoes, air launch equipment, spare parts, torpedo containers, support tools and training services.

The Indian Navy is expanding its stockpile of anti-submarine weapons, particularly for the MH-60R helicopters. The Indian Navy will increase its ability to counter underwater threats. The Navy already uses MK 54 torpedoes, so integration of the additional ones should be smooth.

Most of the torpedo equipment will be supplied directly from the US Navy's stockpile. No compensation agreements are attached to this sale. Implementation may involve the temporary deployment of US personnel to India for training and technical assistance.

The acquisition of MK 54 light torpedoes will significantly enhance the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, particularly for the MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. These torpedoes are designed to combat underwater threats in difficult conditions — in shallow water or in areas with difficult acoustic conditions. Advanced MK 54 sonar processing technology tracks, classifies and targets submarines.
