10 Secrets to Bring Your Laptop Back to Life If It Won't Turn On

When a laptop won't turn on, it can be a panic attack. In fact, there are many simple solutions that can help you bring your device back to life without going to a service center.

RBK-Ukraine (Styler project) writes about this with a link to the Lifewire website, which provides advice, instructions and technology articles.

Check and replace the power supply

This step may seem obvious, but make sure you don't plug the wrong power supply into your laptop. Many laptop AC adapters look the same. If it doesn't provide the correct voltage and amperage for your laptop, it won't work.

However, if the laptop's power light is on, the power supply is probably working. If both the laptop's power light and the adapter's power light are on, this may indicate a battery problem.

Unplug all docking stations and connect the power adapter directly to the laptop

A faulty power port or power supply in the docking station can cause problems when trying to start the laptop. If the laptop starts up like this, you need to replace the faulty dock.

Make sure the screen isn't the problem

A common mistake is when the screen itself is black, people think their laptop is turned off , although it is not.

If you are using a second monitor, disconnect it to see if the desktop appears on the laptop screen.

If it doesn't, press the brightness key on your keyboard to increase it. Try connecting another external monitor to an HDMI or other video output port to see if the problem is only with your laptop display.

If nothing is showing on the laptop display or monitors, but the power and/or buttons are lit keyboard, maybe a problem with the display adapter. In this case, it is best to consult a computer specialist.

Make sure all ventilation holes are clear

Laptops are equipped with special protection circuits that turn off the power to your laptop if any components overheat – usually is the processor.

Overheating can happen for a number of reasons, but most often it happens if you use the laptop on a pillow or sofa – any surface that blocks the ventilation holes. Avoid this to keep your laptop cool.

It's also a good idea to clean your laptop's vents, as hair, dust, and other debris can also cause overheating.

Remove all bootable media

If you've ever loaded something from a USB stick or DVD and forgot to remove it, it can cause startup problems.

Listen for beep codes

When motherboard components come out out of order, the laptop may emit a series of beeps. Their number is actually a code that will help you identify the faulty component.

If you hear these codes, check your laptop manufacturer's website to see what the number of beeps means for your computer. This could be anything from memory issues to graphics card or processor issues.

Remove residual electricity

To do this, remove the battery by disconnecting the power adapter, then pressing and holding the power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect the adapter, wait 30 seconds, and then turn on the system. If the laptop starts up, turn it off again and reinstall the battery.

If your laptop suddenly shuts down while you're using it, it could be a sign of an electrical shock that caused the built-in safety mechanism to shut down the power. This is necessary to protect sensitive components from electrical stress.

If the laptop does not turn on after replacing the battery, the battery is most likely defective and needs to be replaced with a new one.

Replace the CMOS battery

h2>

The laptop motherboard contains a small circular battery that powers the CMOS, which allows the BIOS to load the operating system and all I/O components during boot.

If the battery is dead, the laptop will not start. You can replace the CMOS battery yourself if you are comfortable opening the case. However, most people prefer to have it replaced by an experienced technician.

One of the signs that the CMOS battery needs to be replaced is the frequent need to reset the date and time.

Replace any recently installed components

Have you recently installed new RAM cards or a hard drive? If your laptop suddenly stops booting, there is a good chance that the new hardware is faulty or was installed incorrectly.

Send the laptop in for repair

If none of the above troubleshooting tips help again start your laptop, you may have a faulty motherboard component.

The best option is to have your computer repaired by a professional. You can send it to the manufacturer if your laptop is under warranty.

Like all electronics, laptops don't last forever. If your laptop is no longer under warranty, and the repair cost is high, it may be cheaper to buy a new one.
