$1 domain helps hackers steal millions of dollars

New domain zones «.top» and «.shop» are increasingly becoming a platform for cybercrime. According to research Interisle Consulting Group, despite the fact that such domains occupy only 11% of the market, they are used in 37% of fraud cases. This significantly exceeds the share of traditional domains «.com», «.net» and «.org».

The reason for such popularity among criminals is the low cost and ease of registration. Some of the new domains cost less than one dollar, while the cheapest domain «.com» is valued at a minimum of $ 5.91. This creates ideal conditions for phishing attacks and the creation of fake websites.

Over the past year, the number of domains used for attacks has increased by 81%, exceeding 8.6 million. Of these, 2.6 million were registered wholesale, which is 106% more than in the previous period. In general, the number of phishing attacks increased by 40%.

To combat these threats, experts propose a number of measures, including strengthening checks for domain registration, limiting the number of available subdomains and using automated systems to detect suspicious resources. It is also recommended to introduce programs for quickly blocking criminal sites and punish hosting providers that facilitate criminals.
