The City of Saguenay receives 1 $713,719 from the Quebec government to develop a climate plan.

An agreement to this effect was announced Thursday afternoon by Mayor Julie Dufour, and the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Andrée Laforest.

The funding comes from the Electrification and Climate Change Fund.

The climate plan will allow us to become more proactive in order to improve the management of our city, both financially and environmentally.

A quote from Julie Dufour, mayor of Saguenay

Although the city has three years to submit a plan, it aims to adopt it in spring 2025, after a series of public consultations.

Public consultations will be launched, putting merchants, partners, community organizations and citizens at the heart of this initiative, specifies Saguenay in a press release.

A call for tenders has already been completed to retain the services of a firm which will assess the current impacts of the climate, define the consequences of climate change and analyze the risks and vulnerabilities in the Saguenay territory.

The identity of the selected company will be announced soon.

The future climate plan must be approved by the Minister of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, Benoît Charette.

The objective is to encourage Quebec municipalities to accelerate the local climate transition by electrifying the municipal vehicle fleet, fighting against heat islands or decarbonizing municipal buildings.

Once Saguenay has published its climate plan, the City is committed to planning and implementing concrete projects related to the climate transition.

The beneficiary undertakes, after having completed its climate plan, to use the residual sums of the financial aid […] in order to plan and program projects resulting from its climate plan, it is specified in the agreement.

Our government will also be there to support the completion of projects that will result from the Saguenay climate plan.

A quote from Andrée Laforest, Minister of Municipal Affairs

A committee will be set up to ensure coordination in all communications and actions of the various City departments with the aim of strengthening adaptation, resilience and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions on the entire territory.

The four MRCs of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean also obtain funding to establish an ecological transition plan.

The MRC of Maria-Chapdelaine, that of Domaine-du-Roy and Fjord-du-Saguenay receive a little more than $1.1 million .

As for the MRC Lac-Saint-Jean-Est, it receives approximately $1.2 million. She had already announced a three-part action plan in February.
